Types of routers

Internet transmission technologies are evolving, and distribution devices are changing with them. Along with the outdated models, connected to the telephone cable, there is a choice of high-speed novelties for sale. We will tell about the important characteristics of modern types of routers in our material.

Types of routers for network and Wi-Fi protocols support

Depending on the type of signal transmission, the routers differ:

ADSL, provides stable wired data transmission, connects to a telephone line. They are easy to install, affordable, and they deserve respect among residents of remote settlements. Their disadvantage is the low speed (in terms of technological development): reception is no more than 10 Mb / s, the output is up to 700 Kb / s.

EthernetThese are more advanced devices, they support almost all both wired and wireless (Wi-Fi) network standards. They belong to the mixed (universal) type of devices. They work through a special cable that provides high-quality reception and transmission of data. Currently, they are considered the most reliable and effective models for working on the Internet.

Their advantage is the speed of information transfer, reaching 100 Mb / s in a wired connection, and up to 300 Mb / s in a wireless connection. There are budget models available to the ordinary buyer. The cost varies depending on the manufacturer and built-in functionality.

LTE, the latest technological development, works without wires, by means of a radio signal and provides access to 3G and 4G networks. Internet access is provided through the provider's SIM card. The advantage will be the possibility of its use on the road, business trips, etc. The device is useful in those regions where there are no first two types of communication. Such devices have drawbacks, this is a high price and low connection speed.

Fiber optic transmitters, do not have widespread. They are able to broadcast wired Internet with the highest and stable speed, but their cost is still holding back the growth of popularity.

IMPORTANT. Before choosing, decide on the protocol that your operator provides.

Content consumed

The choice, as a rule, does not depend on the amount of information transmitted. The main parameter here is the bandwidth of the network itself (Internet traffic paid by the subscriber), and the selection is made in accordance with this value.

A router with a speed of up to 100 Mb / s and above will work with full efficiency, if the chosen Internet plan allows. This mode allows, for example, to simultaneously work on the network with several computers connected to one transmitter, while simultaneously watching high quality films on each of them. Surfing the Internet without slowing down.

ON A NOTE. Simultaneous downloading of several videos and browsing on the Internet will require certain characteristics of your PC: a minimum of 64 MB of RAM and a processor of at least 400 MHz.

Wi-Fi coverage

The choice depends on the possible distance between the router and the device receiving the signal. Consider the possible effects of foreign connections (for example, Internet neighbors) that can jam each other. In the one-room room fit a standard device of average power. It will provide a steady reception, ignoring the alien signals.

REFERENCE. The optimal frequency of the router is 5 GHz. But if your equipment does not support this value, then there is a universal 2.4 GHz mode.

A private house with a large plot (if you need to transfer the Internet around its perimeter) will require a more powerful transmitter. In office work, preference is given to performance and power. The best choice would be devices with three bands, equipped with reinforced antennas.

ON A NOTE. The most common standard is the 802.11 speaker system, which stably maintains the speed of 54 Mb / s and is universal for various mobile devices.

Network protection for various types of routers

Protective functions are performed by encryption protocols:

  • WEPThis is an outdated standard, because modern hackers can easily hack it,
  • WPA, is considered 100% protected from hacking, is widespread, its presence is recommended,
  • WPA2, an upgraded version of the previous format.

ON A NOTE. All the difficulties encountered when choosing a transmitter can be solved with the help of the provider. Experts will prompt the necessary parameters of the product, and after purchasing it will make the necessary equipment settings.

We told in our article about the main features of routers. Obviously, without these devices, the user can not do. They are able to provide high-quality reception of the Internet, and modern models are mainly produced in a universal configuration, for the simultaneous support of wired and wireless networks.
