Wood furniture has always been popular. But there are times when its use is impractical. The metal is strong and durable, and the manufactured furniture is stylish and elegant. Working with this material is not very difficult. It is only necessary to have experience in handling welding and the required materials.
How to make metal chairs yourself
To assemble metal chairs you will need a pipe bender. It can be assembled with your own hands. Why in the workshop, fix two bars on the workbench. Between them you need to leave a gap where the metal pipe is inserted. Fill it with sand, insert wooden plugs at the ends, and then you can give the workpieces the desired shape.
Attention! Before you begin, you need to draw up a drawing in detail. Draw the desired chair model. Indicate the dimensions of all furniture elements. According to the drawing, make a full-size stencil from plywood sheet, according to which you can further verify the accuracy of the blanks made.
Which metal to choose
Metal is the most durable material for the manufacture of furniture. With proper treatment, it is not afraid of moisture or sunlight. There are 3 types of metals suitable for making chairs:
- Aluminum. This is a lightweight material; small items are made of it. The main advantage: corrosion resistance, so the furniture can be operated in high humidity. But aluminum is quite fragile and does not withstand significant loads.
- Steel. Oversized furniture is made from this material, which must often be rearranged while maintaining strength. The metal is corroded, but this problem is solved by priming and staining.
- Cast iron. It is a strong and durable metal. The disadvantage is its severity, because of it most often made chairs for the garden, which do not often need to rearrange. Corroded - the surface must be coated with an anti-corrosion compound. It is very difficult to make cast iron chairs on your own.
Necessary tools and materials
For work you will need:
- Metal profile with a cross section of 19-25 mm.
- Studs and bushings.
- Electric drill with a drill for metal.
- Plywood sheet for stencil.
- Wood screws.
- Facing material.
- Pipe bender.
- Scissors.
- Roulette, marker.
- Varnish, paint.
- Sandpaper.
- Sewing machine.
Metal chairs: step by step
Today in interiors there are usually high chairs on an iron frame, which are called bar stools. Products can also be made with a small back and armrests.
Attention! For the manufacture of this furniture, steel tubes with a cross section of about 22-27 mm will be required. Also, a welding machine, metal scissors, tape measure and pencil, grinder or sandpaper. Paint or varnish is required to cover the chair.
Work is carried out in the following order:
- Make a layout from which you can navigate from the plywood sheet.
- From steel pipes, cut the pieces for the seat frame.
- Weld the cut pieces to get the desired shape.
- Cut small steel pieces to fit them in the seat frame. Weld all the elements.
- Sand the resulting product to make it smooth.
The seat of the chair is prepared. Next, they begin to make legs. Why 4 parts of the required size should be cut from a square profile with a cross section of 4 cm. The height of the product must be determined independently, taking into account the needs. The seat must be approximately 45 cm below the table.
Prepared legs do not weld strongly to the body. Evaluate whether the chair is level, only then complete the welding. In this chair you need to make a stand under your feet. Mark the area where the substrate will be located. The optimal distance is approximately 32-37 cm from the seat. Cut pieces of the required size from the steel pipe, install between the legs, and secure with a welding machine.
Metal chairs perfectly fit into the interior of any room and can be used as garden furniture. Metal only seems "heavy", but designers with their examples of work prove the opposite.
