USB keyboard does not work on a laptop

Keyboard is an important element. It is used to enter and search for necessary information, as well as control a laptop or computer. But she is not insured against breakage, no matter how expensive and of high quality.

Why may not work USB keyboard on a laptop

Despite the fact that the laptop has a built-in keyboard, many users for convenience connect an additional device using a USB jack. Sometimes a properly functioning external input device suddenly stops responding to commands. It may look like this:

  • when trying to print something, commands are not executed;
  • Operation buttons do not have light illumination - these buttons include: Numlock, ScrollLock, CapsLock, and others.

ATTENTION! The causes of breakdowns and ways to eliminate them will be the same for all types of keyboards and price categories.

There are several reasons why the product stops working:

  1. Failure of the device itself or damage to the USB cable. The most common possible problem. Therefore, you must first check the connection. To do this, you need to disconnect the cable and connect again. Then restart the laptop.
  2. USB socket failure. To check its operation, the device must be connected to a guaranteed working connector.
  3. Viruses or incorrectly working device drivers. To check this, you must enter the BIOS. If the navigation buttons work, then the problem is in the OS. To troubleshoot, you should update all the necessary drivers, as well as clean the operating system using an antivirus program.

You also need to make sure that the USB controller in the BIOS is turned on. Often with a sudden power surge, USB connectors are turned off. To check this, go to the settings menu and find the item "Keyboard support" or "USB Support" there. If there is a value Disabled, it must be changed to Enabled.

ATTENTION! Some modern keyboard models have a USB 3.0 plug that may not be supported by a laptop!

If none of the above helped, it indicates that the external keyboard itself has failed and needs to be replaced.

Often, laptop users are faced with the fact that the standard keyboard stops working. Part of the buttons or the entire keyboard can fail. Usually, the trouble that arises is resolved fairly easily:

  1. The first step is to press the system buttons Fn or NumLock. Very often, by pressing these buttons, the work of the others can be blocked.
  2. Since there is a small space under the buttons, something might get there. To clean the product, you need to take a soft brush and gently walk across the surface of the device.
  3. Failure of the operating system may result in failure. Therefore, sometimes you just need to restart the device.
  4. If this does not help, then you should update the driver. This can be done through the "Device Manager" or using special programs.
  5. Since the keyboard is connected with a loop, you need to check it for possible damage. If you do not have the necessary experience, then you need to entrust it to a professional. If there is mechanical damage on the loop, it should be replaced with a new one.

REFERENCE! Special small vacuum cleaners are available for cleaning the keyboard.

If nothing helps, then, most likely, the reason is serious enough and you should contact the experts.
